BlackRadioIsBack.com Mixtapes of the Week #24 - (Mostly) Independent Hip-Hop Artist Edition

What's good everyone,

Been a little while since updating this section - have had an insane amount of things to do the past few weeks while going thorugh my regular stack (literal and e-mail links and such) of music to listen to - including what feels like a HUGE proliferation of mixtapes as of late.

For those who are new to the site (and for those who aren't, glad you're around), folks here at BlackRadioIsBack.com and the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast are back again to jump off with some new and classic mixtape posts for the masses. :)

This is our weekly section where BlackRadioIsBack.com hits up the people some more some free promotional mixtapes and mixtape podcasts for download that are pretty on point - not just from the FuseBox Radio/BlackRadioIsBack.com crew, but from all over the place.

To all of my peoples who hit me with hard copies or e-mails of mixtape and mixshow submissions, suggestions, websites and bootleg men (yes, for real, those "hit up so and so for the hot s***" info dropped on me) of various mixtape releases, I thank y'all a lot for supporting this venture.

So your blank CDs ready for these ten joints and support the local mixtape bootleg man/mom and pop store, DJ, website, etc.

This week, we're doing a special focus on the independent Hip-Hop artist - since there are so many now who are using the mixtape angle as a promotional tool (and nice way to make some side $$$).

For my DJs, if you do good mixtapes of Hip-Hop, Soul, Rock, House, Reggae, Classics or are a music artist with your mixtape album out you don't mind having posted as promo on the web, feel free to hit the BlackRadioIsBack.com family up at blackradioisback@gmail.com with a link to your mixtape with cover and tracklisting - hopefully, we'll put your joint up on here in the future.

NOTE (as always):

PLEASE don't send me no B.S. with folks:

A. Yelling loud as hell over the song on some fake DJ Clue/DJ Kay Slay/DJ Khaled/Funkmaster Flex ish and I can't hear the damned song but 10 seconds of it (mics have volume control...thanks)

B. Mixtape "exclusives" that are on the radio - if its dope its dope, don't need the fake labeling

C. Overall wackness

* NOTE - These mixtapes are dirty versions, no radio edits! *

Check The BlackRadioIsBack.com Mixtape Of The Week Archives when you get a chance!

BlackRadioIsBack.com New Music: Tanya Morgan

Tanya Morgan is a Hip-Hop crew of two dudes (despite the ladylike name) what consists of Cincinnati's Donwill and Ilyas and Brooklyn resident Von Pea.

They put out a pretty on point independent Hip-Hop album back in 2006 with Moonlighting and who are now currently promoting their latest release, The Bridge EP, on the Interdependent Media label (just released offically today).

The current single from The Bridge EP, "Be You" has a good times summertime BBQ vibe to it I'm digging...what to you all think?

Hustle Simmons is a dope independent Hip-Hop group consisting of Camden City, NJ Hip-Hop MC, Dave Ghetto and Philadelphia based producer, Tha S Ence.

We've been rocking Dave Ghetto's music over here on the FuseBox Radio Broadcast and BlackRadioIsBack.com damned near since our inception in the late 1990s (over 10 years...crazy) while he was on with Nuthouse the now defunct Goodvibe music label that was home to Bahamadia, Slum Village, Mystic and so forth and are glad to see that the he's been on a consistent grind putting out quality Hip-Hop music with heads (check out the LoveLife? album on Counterflow Records when folks get a chance to see what's good).

The self-titled album is going to drop on the Break Bread Projects label on June 24, 2008.

BlackRadioIsBack.com New Music & Video: Mickey Factz

What's good folks,

I've finally got a chance to check out the music of Bronx NYC independent Hip-Hop MC Mickey Factz and the GFCnewyork crew this past weekend while laid up on allergy meds (no Global Warming, yeah, OK) in the Maryland Music Lab of BlackRadioIsBack.com and the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast.

Mickey Factz was recommended to me by numerous folks who hit your folks up with insane amounts of website links, articles, etc. to check out as being one of the dope cats in the recent wave Hip-Hop Music that's taking it back to the boundary pushing electicness of when the artform began where you can your BoomBap and Street Hip-Hop joints, but there was nothing wrong with throwing in some Rock, Electro, etc. up in the mix as well with other subject matter that can be simple as all hell or go somewhere else that actually gets feet tapping and heads nodding.

There's not a term yet I know that describes this wave of Hip-Hop Music as of yet that seems to include heads like The Cool Kids, Jay Electronica, Kidz In The Hall and so forth (hopefully no description equivalent as asinine as "Neo-Soul" will sneak its way into the general populace but who knows - we could run into the term "HipsterHop" or some such s*** later), so I'll just call it good Black Music for the time being.

Thankfully, folks are happy to say that this brother is not just another part of the Internet Hipster Hype Machine - there are real skills, creativity and depth to Mickey Factz's songs and such that if someone doesn't grab him up on a decent business deal from a major label, their A&Rs need to go back to Finding A Decent Hip-Hop Artist 101 course.

Well, a decent amount of major labels need to do that anyway, but that's a whole other post for another day (along with Actually Putting Out The Decent Hip-Hop Artist's Album In The Near Future 102)....

Give the latest mixtape by Mickey Factz a listen for yourself and let folks know what you think...

BlackRadioIsBack.com New Music: C-Rayz Walz & Kosha Dillz

What's good again folks,

Got some more high quality independent Hip-Hop music for heads to check out...

Throughout my grind DJing and hitting up events in the New Jersey/NYC Hip-Hop circutfor the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast and writing for BlackRadioisBack.com for the past few years, I've ran into a lot of dope Hip-Hop music from Hip-Hop MCs C-Rayz Walz (part of the world famous NYC Stronghold crew along with Hip-Hop MCs L.I.F.E Long, Stelf Index(P-Pullz), Poison Pen, Breez Evahflowin, Wiz, Mic Terror, Dj Static, Immortal Technique and Swave) and Kosha Dillz (back during when the dude called himself KD Flow back in the days when I was an undergrad at Rutgers, which makes me feel old as hell now - LOL) on the solo tip.

Now, in a recording period of 24 hours with rock and jazz influenced production handled by the young up-and-coming producer Kentron Da Mastadon, both MCs have put out an extremely on point collaboration project, Freestyle vs. Written,on Modular Moods Recordings (home of MCs like Y-Love and such) that's going to officially drop September 15, 2008 worldwide (August 26, 2008 on iTunes).

Check out the entire upcoming album below in this streaming player and let folks know what you think - personally, this is one of the few releases lately I'm actually looking forward to dropping in a very long minute from the Hip-Hop Nation:

BlackRadioIsBack.com Music: Steinski

Along with his partner Double Dee, Steinski co-produced the series of records known as The Lessons in the 1980s that turnablists, DJs, music producers and just listeners of Hip-Hop and mashups have looked up to since: “The Payoff Mix,” “Lesson 2 (The James Brown Mix),” “Lesson 3 (The History Of Hiphop)” for the Tommy Boy label.

These analog tape cut-and-paste collages of hundreds of samples are still in circulation via lots of bootleg versions (especially due to the fact that in this "Sample Clearence or Die" Music Era, there is next to no way it could be released legally without shelling out extreme amounts of cash) and are acknowledged as being three of the most influential works in the world of Hip-Hop and Dance Music production, whether through inspiring similar works or artists trying to find (and some actually use) the samples that were up in there.

In other words, for you folks who are fans of DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, mash-ups, etc. - these music works were the foundation of what's good now.

The first "Lesson" record ended up winning a nationwide remix contest sponsored by Tommy Boy Records that was judged by music greats and influencers such as Afrika Bambaataa, Shep Pettibone, Jellybean Benitez and Arthur Baker, and subsequently became a Top 10 request on Black/Urban Radio nationwide.

Since doing "The Lessons" (and due to various reasons, getting next to no compensation from those productions), Steinski has done lots of solo production and music work for everything from the Ninja Tune label (who's owners, the production crew Coldcut were influenced by him, did the famous Rakim "Paid In Full" remix) to scoring for various TV and radio commercials.

A retrospective release of his work has just dropped on the Illegal Art label (release date: May 27, 2008), called What Does It All Mean?: 1983-2006 Retrospective.

Folks should definitely check this CD out in my opinon - the music on there is ridiculously fresh. With the 14 Old School Hip-Hop Era Productions (all 3 of The Lessons are included) and 28 later era tracks, it should at the very least, be interesting to check out as a history lesson to jam to.

Here's some free music to check out and download from Steinski while you're here on BlackRadioIsBack.com:

Check it out, download and hope you enjoy!
