The movie Notorious - covering the good, bad and ugly sides of life and creativity of one of modern Hip-Hop's best MCs (should be at least in your Top 10 or Top 25), The Notorious B.I.G. a.k.a. Biggie Smalls - will be dropping this Friday, January 16, 2008 all over the U.S. movie theatres through Bad Boy Entertainment and Fox Searchlight.



Since his tragic murder (about 12 years ago now, I still remember being a freshman in college at Rutgers U. turning on the radio in the morning to Hot 97 and hearing how quiet and sad everyone was), B.I.G. (born name Christopher Wallace) is beyond a doubt still living on in his artistic influence in the form of Black Music that is Hip-Hop.

Besides hoping that the movie will be good (more Paid In Full status in comparison to Get Rich or Die Trying), my personal hope is that this movie could perhaps have the long-term pop cultural impact of actually at least bringing back some charisma and skill in mainstream Hip-Hop (especially from my folks in the East Coast).



We can debate on lists of who was/is the best Hip-Hop MC and their songs all day, but the 1990s was RULED by Biggie and Tupac in regards to being unique characters who you knew who they were from the gate the second they appeared on the scene and opened their mouths, not mainstream wannabe MC #1,983 over the producer of the day's beat talking uncreative thuggery. :-/

The highlighted songs are samples folks can listen to from The Great Debaters Movie Soundtrack, which will be dropping on December 11, 2007 on Atlantic Records.

The soundtrack - which actor Denzel Washington had a hand in picking and choosing the songs - is on a big old school Black soul type of feel with current artists (Sharon Jones) to old school folks (Marion Anderson, Art Tatum) in the mix.

The movie itself drops on Christmas, December 25, 2007 in theaters. Here's the description of what the movie will be about from the press release - looks like one of those on the up and up inspirational joints:

From two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington and an ensemble cast lead by Washington that includes Academy Award® winner Forest Whitaker, comes "The Great Debaters." Inspired by a true story, "The Great Debaters" chronicles the journey of Professor Melvin Tolson (Denzel Washington), a brilliant but volatile debate team coach who uses the power of words to shape a group of underdog students from a small African American college in the deep south into a historically elite debate team. A controversial figure, Professor Tolson challenged the social mores of the time and was under constant fire for his unconventional and ferocious teaching methods as well as his radical political views.

In their pursuit for excellence, Tolson's debate team receives a groundbreaking invitation to debate Harvard University's championship team. The film is directed by Denzel Washington and stars Washington, Forest Whitaker, Jurnee Smollett, Nate Parker, Denzel Whitaker, and Kimberly Elise. "The Great Debaters" was written by Robert Eisele and Tom Epperson and produced by Todd Black, Kate Forte, Oprah Winfrey and Joe Roth.
