The Knux are a music group of who do what they call "Garage-Hop" music.

Consisting of members Rah Almillio and Krispy Kream, this New Orleans crew of folks have been getting some shine via the independent music circut and various publications and outlets such as Complex Magazine and MTVU.

They've just been signed to Interscope Records under the Chic Freak/HHH imprint.

Give the songs a listen and check out the video...what do you all think? It's definitely a good take on the "rap/rock" sounds that isn't mad derivative and has a good groove.

The February 12, 2008 release date of Droppin' Science: Greatest Samples From The Blue Note Lab album is going to be coming up pretty soon (check out our previous post about the album, the tracklisting and who sampled what in the Hip-Hop realm here), displaying some of the great jazz music from the Blue Note Records label that was sampled for quite a few classic Hip-Hop Music joints.

DJ & Turntablist J. Rocc From The World Famous Beat Junkies did a set for y'all to download for free mixing the original jazz tracks and the Hip-Hop music that came forth from them together to see what's good with the Black Music lineage - check it out below:

Since MySpace has pretty much become an important part of music artists promoting themselves (if for no other reason, its free to setup something that looks decent and can play your music to the masses), BlackRadioIsBack.com and the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast has started going a weekly segment where we highlight eight music artists who do we personally feel are on point doing quality Black Music of various genres.

Folks over here are pretty much on MySpace every day checking artists out, but if you feel we're missing you, hit us up at the BlackRadioIsBack.com MySpace Page or at our e-mail at blackradioisback@gmail.com.

We have some sample music tracks from each BlackRadioIsBack.com MySpace 8 artist up on here now for folks to listen to - check out their MySpace pages for more cool joints and other information.

Here we go - hope you enjoy the music on here and can support these and other worthy music artists on the scene:

Kokayi
Genre: Hip-Hop/Jazz
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/kokayi

Washington, DC MC and Producer Kokayi's style is a crazy blend of Jazz and Hip-Hop fusion styles that he's had in the mix since his work with the crew Opus Akoben from it's formation through the Freestyle Union (the organization founded in 1994 by Toni Blackman and Monty Tafin) the 1990s.

Kokayi has worked with artists such as DJ/Producer Sharkey and C-Rayz Walz for their upcoming album release “Monster Maker” (Babygrande Records), Soul music singer Wayna and plenty of other folks.

He now as a great CD currently available called Mass Instructions on his label Pho13Music. Besides our favorite track from the Mass Instructions album, DCB, check out "Knowusmayne" and "Gamesteady" on his MySpace page for some quality bangers.

Kokayi - DCB

Hevewae
Genre: Hip-Hop
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/theundergroundbeast

Hevewae (a.k. Mr. DMV) is another Washington, DC area Hip-Hop MC who's music is in the realm of what is known in the region as Crank Muzik - what I look at as more 21st Century Forward Crunk Hip-Hop style of vibe. I've seen his releases, promotions and things out heavy while doing my travels around the DC Metro area and checked out the MySpace page.

The bro definitely has some energetic, tear the club up street Hip-Hop music going on that I think can fit in with any of the lastest Southern Hip-Hop joints on blast on the radio and video channels now and hopefully, this young bro can get signed and/or some solid distribution with someone who's quality to get the music out there to more of the masses.

Check out the "What It Do Moe" single featuring Babylon from this upcoming street album release in March 2008, "The Ill" to get a gauge on where folks are at that we chose here over at BlackRadioIsBack.com and also give a listen to "Hood Pride" on the MySpace page.

Hevewae feat. Babylon - What It Do Moe

Donnie
Genre: Soul
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/donniemusic

I personally been following Atlanta Soul artist and songwriter Donnie since he had the album release for his first insanely cool album The Colored Section on Giant Step records around 2001-2002 (it was re-released on Motown Records in 2003 and in my personal opinion, was promoted terribly by the label).

He has an old school soul vibe with his music (some folks I think would think of a Stevie Wonder or Donnie Hathaway), but he's definitely a modern day hard hitting topical brother with the things he talks about on his songs (everything from Hurricane Katrina, love, the "legal" drug industry, racism, etc.) and is able to balance that out with great grooves and not coming off as overly preachy.

Folks over here chose "Impatient People" from his latest album, The Daily News, to give a sample of his flavor of music - also check out "911" on Donnie's MySpage page.

Donnie - Impatient People

Spoonface
Genre: Electronica/Folk/Indie
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/spoonface1

UK Producer Spoonface has a focus on all kinds of Dance Music - Eletronica, House, Soul, Dub, Drum & Bass, Broken Beat and Nu-Jazz just to name a few genres.

Through his record label, FAADA (Forever And Always Diverse Appreciation), he puts out various releases by himself and other groups to span these Black Music genres for some quality "four on the floor" joints to get people on the floor to groove and shake off the wallflower syndrome that seems to happen to some heads in the club.

Check out this release from Spoonface feat. Baby below, "Nah Nah", and "See Me Now" and "Circus World" on his MySpage page.

Spoonface feat. Baby - Nah Nah

Traedonya
Genre: Trip Hop/Soul/Electronica
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/traedonya

France via New York City Music Artist Traedonya has a very extensive history in the realm of Black Music - from performing with jazz greats like Etta James to being a recording artist of the old school Hip-Hop Tuff City Records label and beginning member of the Blackwatch Movment and Hip-Hop crew the X-Clan.

Now, through her own company, Prohibition Entertainment, she is releasing some very interesting music joints that are a blend of Electronica, Soul and Rock music.

We chose the international single "Beloved" for folks to groove off of Traedonya's creativity. Also check out the live version of "Addicted" on the MySpace.

Traedonya - Beloved (Original UK Version)

Red
Genre: Rock/Glam/Pop Punk
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/redmusik

Red is a UK Rock trio formed in 2001 of lead vocalist and guitar player CoCo, bass player and vocalalist Luna and drummer Chi after a meeting among mutual friends.

They have shades of folks from Minnie Riperton to Led Zeppelin as musical influences, so you know that their music is going to be far from boring and ordinary.

BlackRadioIsBack.com chose Red's "Her" as a foundation to get where they are coming from with the music. On the MySpace page, "Reality" and "Kiss My PBA" are cool joints was well.

Red - Her

Cindy Blackman
Genre: Jazz/Experimental/Rock
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/cindyblackmanmusic

Cindy Blackman is a talented Rock, Funk and Jazz drummer who has officially worked, recorded and toured with famous Black Rock musician Lenny Kravitz since 1993 as well as session work with music artists such as George Benson, Angela Bofil, Al B. Sure, Jackie McLean, & Joss Stone amongst others.

She has done work with her own bands (9 in all) throughout the years, her latest being Music For The New Millennium.

Definitely not restrained by others definition of what Black Music should be, her solo work and collaborations with others is extremely varied and diverse.

Check out one of our favorite tracks, "The Three Van Goghs" below and "Call From The Ancestors" and "All I Want" to get an idea of Cindy Blackman's work.

Cindy Blackman - The Three Van Goghs

Stephcynie Curry
Genre: R&B/Rock
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/stephcyniecurry

Stephcynie Curry is an up and coming New York via Texas singer who has done background vocal work for artists such as Hidden Beach's Lina and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree In Jazz Vocals from the prestigious New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City.

This talented unsigned artist's vocal flows from Jazzy Soul to more hard edgy grooves and sounds. Hopefully though hard work and grind, we'll be seeing more of this young sister's work for the masses to hear in the future.

Check out one of our favorite tracks from Stephcynie, "Save My Love" - also check the great track "Struggle" on her MySpace page.

Stephcynie Curry - Save My Love

On Feburary 12, 2008, Blue Note Records will release the Droppin Science': Greatest Samples From The Blue Note Label LP collection (on both CD and vinyl for the DJ heads), which is going to display of some of the legendary jazz music label’s classic 1960s - 1970s jazz-funk tracks that were used as samples in some classic Hip-Hop and Soul songs from the 1980s to the present.

For whatever reason from multiple fronts, folks don't seem to want to give it up for the Black Music of the Past influencing and creating Black Music of the Present and Future, so I think that this release is a good look not just for cats who are into producing and sampling, but as a mini-history lesson in the evolution of Black Music period (some of the best Hip-Hop tracks have used samples, as far as I'm concerned, especially in that mid-1980s to mid-1990s period before that huge crackdown on sampling costs, etc. occured).

Bazaar Royale
Genre: Soul/Hip Hop/Rock
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/bazaarroyale

Bazaar Royale's interesting blend of Soul and Rock music styles (that he calls "Ghetto Metal") definitely makes him an interesting artist for folks to check out.

He's put in work with music artists in the past and present from Hip-Hop MC DMX (who's Bloodline Records label he is now signed to) to the 1990s Da Bassment Collective, which featured Missy Elliott, producer Timbaland and R&B artist Ginuwine.

Along with our selected single, "Get It Out Your Brain", also check out "Dream" and "Thanks" on his MySpace page.

Bazaar Royale - Get It Out Your Brain

Amanda Ray
Genre: Alternative/Ambient/Electronica
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/amandaraymusic

Amanda Ray's music to me is best described as a blend of electronica music backgrounds of folks like early Massive Attack with a touch of jazzy and soulful vocal stylings. It's definitely some laid back, soundtrack style sort of music folks can chill out to.

Along with the BlackRadioIsBack.com pick of "Body of Gold", check out her track "Ripple Junction" to get an idea of where Amanda Ray is at.

Amanda Ray - Body of Gold

Ben Jacobs
Genre: Hip-Hop
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/benjacobsonline

I'm feeling this G-Unit Philly Records affiliate MC due to him having his own vibe and style of rhyming - Ben Jacobs is not doing the copycat styles that some Hip-Hop cats are doing as of late who come on board with any popular clique of the hour (a.k.a. the "Clones R Us" style - boo).

You definitely get a solid East Coast street Hip-Hop vibe from his tracks and good flavor to keep folks interested.

Besides the "Vanilla Dutch" single we have below, check out Ben Jacobs on the Public Enemy #1 Sampling "G-Unit Philly" track on his MySpace page.

Ben Jacobs - Vanilla Dutch

Cymarshall Law
Genre: Hip-Hop
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/cymarshalllaw

Cymarshall Law has been on the independent Hip-Hop grind for a while in the New Jersey and Philadelphia areas for a few years, steadily building up a loyal worldwide fanbase with live performances and releases for his style of blending the old school and new school MC vibs of Hip-Hop music.

I first ran into him while doing the FuseBox Radio Broadcast around the late 1990s with his group Everliven Sound and am happy to see his growth as a quality music artist.

Right now, he as a LP release on the Rawkus label, Hip-Hop in the Flesh, available for folks to check out.

One of the singles from an upcoming release, Control feat. KRS-One, is the track chosen by BlackRadioIsBack.com for getting an idea of the direction that Cymarshall Law is coming from. Also, feel free to check out "Rush To The Front" on the MySpace.

KRS-One feat. Cymarshall Law - Control

Duchess
Genre: New Wave/Soul/Reggae
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/duchyp

This unsigned UK singer, songwriter and bandleader's music has a soulful and reggae influenced (more on the drum and bass/2 Step/house end of things) vibe with her creations.

Besides our chosen track, "More Than A Feeling", check out "Sunrise" on her MySpace page to get a taste of her musical direction that wants to make folks groove and dance.

Duchess - More Than A Feeling

Subliminal Orphans
Genre: Hip Hop/Rock/Jam Band
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/subo

Subliminal Orphans do what half of these so-called "rap-rock" bands were/are supposed to do, but actually do it well - reaching true appeal without watering things down.

This live Hip-Hop band consists of 7 members from the diverse areas of the Poconos, West Philly and South Orange, NJ whose blend of life experiences and musical influences make a great mix of music for the average head to groove off of.

The BlackRadioIsBack.com chosen track by the group, "Good Shoes", gives a solid foundation of what Subliminal Orphans is about musically. Also check out the track "STFU" feat. B-Real of Cypress Hill on their MySpace page to see what's good.

Subliminal Orphans - Good Shoes

Precise
Genre: Hip Hop/Rap/Breakbeat
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/twisemusic

Precise is a Brooklyn, NY Hip-Hop MC and actress blends all of her talents well with her expressive music.

She has various mixtape projects out and with her affiliation with the Divine Mill record label, it looks like there is a lot of good things coming from here in the future.

Folks over here chose the "Buddy RMX" with Heavy D and Musiq to highlight Precise's flow, which I feel is reminiscent of that old school Hip-Hop feel good and playful vibe of past female Hip-Hop MCs like Salt-N-Pepa and MC Lyte. We also recommend to check out the "G.O.O.D. Music" freestyle up on her MySpace page.

Precise feat. Heavy D & Musiq - Buddy RMX

Davina
Genre: Soul/Disco House/R&B
MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/idavinamusic

Davina is best known in the mainstream for her soul hit back in the early 1990s, "So Good" (both the original and the remix with Raekwon of Wu-Tang Clan) is still doing great work on the independent scene and has some current releases out there for the masses to check out.

Give a listen to one of those tracks that we posted up on here, "Let's Stay Together" and also check out "What's Going On" on her MySpace page.

Davina - Let's Stay Together
Shouts out to my peoples Nasty Nes over at RapAttackLives.com for putting me on to this bro - the music, vibe and message is pretty fly on this track and I'm feeling the video is cool too.

What do y'all think?

Arash a.k.a Shammy Dee - Rise

Arash a.k.a Shammy Dee Official Website

This GAME Rebellion Mixtape is pretty fire and it's available as a free download by clicking here (though folks can also slip folks some pocket money on the site as well to support, by your choosing).

Here is the biography of the group from their official MySpace.com page:

Searching for Rick Rubin

Rock and roll has been awaiting the coming of Game Rebellion for a long time: An all Black all outta Brooklyn band whose metal, punk and rudeboy skanking licks sound as credible and crunchy as their hiphop lyrics and headnodding bounce. Game makes the difficult sound effortless and the miraculous seem second nature: A hard rock band with a B-boy MC who can actually spit? No problem. A street worthy mixtape of hiphop anthems created by a band that actually rocks and flows? No problem.

Game Rebellion has been making big waves on the New York Afro-punk/Black Rock scene for about three years. In that short time they've ventured out even further out to slam heads rock houses and muddy the lilywhite waters of alt-rock from NYC and Cali to Puerto Rico and the UK. They just may be the best-kept secret in music right now (their vaunted endorsement sealed with a kiss from Sade notwithstanding).

A band of rowdy brothers with higher education pedigrees--Yohimbe and Netic have college paper, Chief Med is a qualified acupuncturist-- they've got nice skills on the mic and book learned brains and aren't afraid if today's dumbered-down hiphop knows it. They're no strangers to the classroom, the rehearsal room, the protest line or one suspects, give their brand of gangsta-militancy, the police.

Up until now there hasn't been a full-length Game Rebellion recording that adequately captured their dual mastery of hiphop's beats and rhymes driven swagger and assault-sonics and rock and roll's action-figure machismo. Up until now you haven't heard anybody dare attempt a project like Game Rebellion's Searching for Rick Rubin--a balls-out-balls-to-the-wall remix/reimagining/re-playing of tunes that bear the stamp of Rubin's studio-magic wand.Because Game got gusto and gumtption they got up up for the challenge of instrumentally replaying and rewriting songs that made hiphop matter in the 80s and 90s.

For Game Rebellion's MC Netic the choice of Rubin as a guiding light was a no-brainer. "He was the first guy to get it right as far as mixing the sounds of hiphop and rock. I also did my thesis on him in college."

Reading is fundamental with Game--especially with respect to the history of culture, politics and hiphop. Game's keyboard, trumpet and hypeman Emi recalls a night spent on Google scavenging for all things Rubin and finding not just Run DMCs "My Adidas", PEs "Public Enemy No.1", The Geto Boys "My Minds Playing Tricks on Me", Jay Z''s "99 Problems" and LL's 'Going Back To Cali'-- reinventions of which did make Searching''s cut (as 'did Red Hot Chili Pepper's "Under The Bridge" and The Dixie Chick's) but Sir Mix A Lot's 'Baby Got Back' which, strangely, did not.

Though hiphop and rock share common ancestors, like Mama Africa and Fats Domino, and though both idioms now share common audiences, bridging the two always requires mad skills and realness to convince true fans that you're not a joke, a wankster, a limp bizkit. For the record, Game Rebellion is that band, yeah, we're talking those kinda Negroes, New Africans, the kind intent on who bringing us a walloping slice of The Other Real Black Experience-- that louder, darker and prouder strain mainstream media loves to ignore, the one responsible for Jimi Hendrix, Public Enemy, Fishbone, Dead prez, among others.

After hearing Searchin' you suspect these Game Rebellion cats would fearlessly paratroop into a stadium full of Wu Tang Clan or Slayer fans, not flinch (or worse beg for peace, love and understanding), do their stompdown thang, and leave waving hardcore Wu or Slayer heads on a stick.

You'll likely want to see them wreck the house for yourself before you'll trust that assessment on faith. Until then check out Searching and just know that everything Game's doing here they can do from the stage even more boom-bip-astically, MC-nastily, hardcore-actively--no little thanks due to Game's bass and drummer combo Black Steel and Mr Pink who never heard a jazz, rock, soul or hiphop groove they couldnt mosh to the floor, poplock into obedience, and harness like a tornado.

If you dug '99 Problems' before you're about dig it some more, (and if you're a radical maybe even more than before) when you hear Netic twist the hook's provocative declaration into "99 Problems and a Bush aint one of them" (and then compare the lame suckaduck in the white house to daddysboy AJ Soprano.) And if you live for the evil chromatics of a punk-prog band like Tool than you'll likely get more live when you hear how guitarists Yohimbe and Chief Med piledrive the riff from hell into this ravenous track. What Game does with "My Adidas" is pure bebop theory in action--lacing one of the biggest and most beloved hooks in hiphop history with their own black-market sneaker-pimp scenario. Netic and Yohimbe both speak of the trepidation that came with this project, the mandate for it "not be corny" looming like a vulture above all else. Corny they've avoided for sure (whew!) but fortunately not at the expense of rampaging angst, militancy, wit and youthful exuberance.

** Note - Due to distractions of life (a.k.a. my trying to have one of some sort in between this, the 9 to 5 and the radio show) and whatnot, I've fallen a bit behind with these BlackRadioIsBack.com MySpace 8 postings...sorry about that. Now, besides the mini-info pieces, we have a listening section with each clip for folks to check out a little bit of what the music artist on display has done. Hopefully you'll dig it, check out their sites, maybe spend some $$$ on some music, etc. and we'll all be happy...yay. **

This week we're going a bit off the beaten path to find out what's happened to some Black Music artists who we haven't heard a lot from lately, especially in the "mainstream" realm.

Here we go:

What's good everyone,

Here is another week where I'm hitting up the people some more some free promotional mixtapes and mixtape podcasts for download that are pretty on point - not just from the FuseBox Radio/BlackRadioIsBack.com crew, but from all over the place.

I have gone through a lot of e-mails of submissions, websites and bootleg men this week digging for mixtape releases (thanks to everyone for that) and luckily have a few new quality joints for the people.

Get your blank CDs ready and support the local mixtape (well, I guess mix CD now in this technological age and whatnot - haven't seen an actual cassette tape with a mix in over 10 years) bootleg man/mom and pop store, website, etc. - we have four old and new joints for you to grab a hold of.

For my DJs, if you do good Hip-Hop, Soul, Rock, House, Reggae, Classics, etc. mixtapes or are an artist with your mixtape album out you don't mind having posted as promo on the web, feel free to hit the BlackRadioIsBack.com family up at blackradioisback@gmail.com with a link to your mixtape with cover and tracklisting - hopefully, we'll put your joint up on here.

NOTE:

PLEASE don't send me no B.S. with folks:

A. Yelling loud as hell over the song on some fake DJ Clue/DJ Kay Slay/DJ Khaled/Funkmaster Flex ish and I can't hear the damned song but 10 seconds of it (mics have volume control...thanks)

B. Mixtape "exclusives" that are on the radio - if its dope its dope, don't need the fake labeling

C. Overall wackness

* NOTE - These mixtapes are dirty versions, no radio edits! *
