Good Evening BlackRadioIsBack.com and FuseBox Radio Broadcast family! :)

It's been a while since doing some extra things on the blog in between us setting up a new overall homebase FuseBox Radio Broadcast website (http://FuseBoxRadioOnline.com), covering NY Comic Con (article and videos posted up here in the next day or so) and getting a new string of content lined up for over here & beyond.

It's been madness, but a good and positive bit of it...

One of the great things that have come from this madness have been lining up opportunities for giveaways and interviews for the radio show and the website.

We currently have 5 pairs of tickets to giveaway for the Saturday, October 23, 2010 show (starting at 7 pm) featuring Living Colour's Will Calhoun that is a part of the Music....On Stage event series by the National Geographical Society.

The event is going to be held at Grosvenor Auditorium (located at 1600 M Street, NW in Washington, DC) and start at 7:30 pm.

Photobucket
Just e-mail us at blackradioisback@gmail.com with the subject "Will Calhoun Ticket Giveaway" with your name or contact us via Twitter (@FuseBoxRadio) wit the same message (preferably via DM) and we'll do a random drawing of names this Friday, October 22, 2010 by 2 pm EST of the winners. Winners will be able to pick up their tickets at the door.

In the meantime, enjoy this great audio interview we had with Will Calhoun (info about what we touched base on topic wise is below), read up a bit on him with a basic biography from his website and peep with some great videos of him in action....good luck to all who enter!

During the great FuseBox Radio/BlackRadioIsBack.com interview this week with Mr. Calhoun, we talked about his background in the Bronx, his various musical influences, how labels have split up the music scene way too much (including the terms "Black Rock", "Black Music" etc.), his current and future music projects both on the solo tip & with Living Colour, some rather bugged out occurrences he had in the music industry, the importance of cultural ties in the creation of music and a lot of other cool things in a nice 45 minute time frame...check it out!

What's up BlackRadioIsBack.com & FuseBox Radio Broadcast Folks, hope that your week is wrapping up well!

It has been a little while since we've done a giveaway here, but we've been working hard to get y'all some decent stuff for the hard economic times and the Holiday Season.

We have 10 DVD copies of the documentary American Drug War: The Last White Hope and movie posters to giveaway (shout out to director Kevin Booth, Sacred Cow Productions and Nancy Byron of OGPR providing the materials to us).

This is a very good documentary for everyone - whether pro- or anti-drug bias - to check out.

Here is a mini-description of what the movie American Drug War: The Last White Hope is about from the official website:

35 years after Nixon started the war on drugs, we have over one million non-violent drug offenders living behind bars.

The War on Drugs has become the longest and most costly war in American history, the question has become, how much more can the country endure? Inspired by the death of four family members from "legal drugs" Texas filmmaker Kevin Booth sets out to discover why the Drug War has become such a big failure.

Three and a half years in the making, the film follows gang members, former DEA agents, CIA officers, narcotics officers, judges, politicians, prisoners and celebrities. Most notably the film befriends Freeway Ricky Ross; the man many accuse for starting the Crack epidemic, who after being arrested discovered that his cocaine source had been working for the CIA.

AMERICAN DRUG WAR shows how money, power and greed have corrupted not just drug pushers and dope fiends, but an entire government. More importantly, it shows what can be done about it.

This is not some 'pro-drug' stoner film, but a collection of expert testimonials from the ground troops on the front lines of the drug war, the ones who are fighting it and the ones who are living it.

After 4 years of production including several sold out test screenings in New York, Austin & Los Angeles, the final version of American Drug War "the last white hope" is locked and loaded.

What's up everyone,

Hope that the week has been going well so far!

It has been a little while since we've done a giveaway here from FuseBox Radio Broadcast, but we have a LOT lined up for the upcoming fall season.

This is one of the first giveaways that starting things up for folks...

We are giving away 4 copies of this great book, Slavery By Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II (now currently out on Doubleday Books) by author Douglas A. Blackmon.

Here is a mini-description of what the book Slavery By Another Name is about from its official website:

The Age of Neo-Slavery

In this groundbreaking historical expose, Douglas A. Blackmon brings to light one of the most shameful chapters in American history—when a cynical new form of slavery was resurrected from the ashes of the Civil War and re-imposed on hundreds of thousands of African-Americans until the dawn of World War II.

Under laws enacted specifically to intimidate blacks, tens of thousands of African Americans were arbitrarily arrested, hit with outrageous fines, and charged for the costs of their own arrests. With no means to pay these ostensible “debts,” prisoners were sold as forced laborers to coal mines, lumber camps, brickyards, railroads, quarries and farm plantations. Thousands of other African Americans were simply seized by southern landowners and compelled into years of involuntary servitude. Government officials leased falsely imprisoned blacks to small-town entrepreneurs, provincial farmers, and dozens of corporations—including U.S. Steel Corp.—looking for cheap and abundant labor. Armies of "free" black men labored without compensation, were repeatedly bought and sold, and were forced through beatings and physical torture to do the bidding of white masters for decades after the official abolition of American slavery.

The neoslavery system exploited legal loopholes and federal policies which discouraged prosecution of whites for continuing to hold black workers against their wills. As it poured millions of dollars into southern government treasuries, the new slavery also became a key instrument in the terrorization of African Americans seeking full participation in the U.S. political system.

Based on a vast record of original documents and personal narratives, Slavery By Another Name unearths the lost stories of slaves and their descendants who journeyed into freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation and then back into the shadow of involuntary servitude. It also reveals the stories of those who fought unsuccessfully against the re-emergence of human labor trafficking, the modern companies that profited most from neoslavery, and the system’s final demise in the 1940s, partly due to fears of enemy propaganda about American racial abuse at the beginning of World War II.

Slavery By Another Name is a moving, sobering account of a little-known crime against African Americans, and the insidious legacy of racism that reverberates today.

All you have to do to enter the contest is to send an e-mail out to blackradioisback@gmail.com with the subject header "Slavery By Another Name Book Contest" by September 1, 2008.

The four winners will be randomly selected by the BlackRadioIsBack.com and FuseBox Radio Broadcast staff.

Good luck to everyone who enters in!

What's up everyone,

It's been a little while, but we have a new contest for folks over here from the BlackRadioIsBack.com and syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast family.

We have four copies of the excellent new book, Standing Tall: A Memoir of Tragedy and Triumph by Rutgers University Women's Basketball Coach, C. Vivian Stringer (with Laura Tucker) to giveaway.

Just send an e-mail with the subject "BlackRadioIsBack.com Standing Tall Book Giveaway" to blackradioisback@gmail.com and we'll randomly choose the winners to ship the books to - the deadline for this contest is Saturday, April 5, 2008.

Good Luck!

Here is the Book Description from the cover for folks to see what the book is about:

“Lots of people have dreams, but C. Vivian Stringer is the dream—a coalminer’s daughter who believed when her Poppa told her there was no obstacle she could not surmount. And she lives that dream, teaching others to rise up to meet challenges, turning underdogs into champions again and again—on and off the court. This is the quintessential American story, of a woman and of a family pulling together against the odds. Standing Tall offers an important message of hope to so many.”
—John Chaney, Hall of Fame college basketball coach

At a time when heroes are too rare, C. Vivian Stringer sets a shining example. She has time and again shown character, fortitude, and heart, both on and off the hardwood, and in the face of unbearable loss. In Standing Tall, she shares her remarkable life story, inspiring us to find this fortitude within ourselves.

“Work hard, and don’t look for excuses,” Stringer’s parents told her, “and you can achieve anything.” But her faith and perseverance would be tested many times. A gifted athlete, she had to fight for a place on an all-white cheerleading squad in the sixties. In 1981, just as her coaching career was taking off, her fourteen-month-old daughter, Nina, was stricken with spinal meningitis. Nina would never walk or talk again.

Still grieving, Stringer brought a small, poor, historically black college to the national championships—a triumph hailed as “Hoosiers with an all-female cast.” In 1991, her husband, Bill—her staunchest supporter, the father of her children, and the love of her life—fell dead of a sudden heart attack, but that same year, she led yet another young team to the Final Four.

Through these dark times and others—including her bout with cancer, shared here for the first time—Stringer has carried her burdens with grace. Given her history, it was no surprise that she led her team to respond to Don Imus’s slurs with dignity and courage.

Standing Tall is a story of quiet strength in the face of punishing odds. Above all, it is an extraordinary love story—love for the game, for the players she has coached, for her close-knit family, and for the husband she lost far too soon. It will resonate long after the last page.

Below is some information about the game:

Medal of Honor Airborne Website
Electronic Arts Website

Medal of Honor Airborne is set to redefine the series and will change the way shooters are played. Medal of Honor Airborne offers a dramatically different approach to FPS games with its unprecedented non-linear gameplay. For the first time in a FPS game, players airdrop into combat from a C-47 and land anywhere in an open battlefield. Conflict on the ground offers unprecedented tactical choice in vertical, open battle spaces with a wealth of attack routes and flanking opportunities.

The Medal of Honor Airborne development team continues to ensure that the ideals and integrity of the prestigious Congressional Medal of Honor are accurately reflected in the game. The producers sought counsel from numerous expert sources to make certain the game is historically accurate and as true to the WWII Airborne experience as possible.

Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino has scored the music for Medal of Honor Airborne. An esteemed composer for numerous film and TV projects such as “Lost”, “Alias,” M:i:III (2007), The Incredibles (2004), and most recently Ratatouille (2007), Giacchino has been repeatedly recognized for his contributions to theatrical composition and score. As the original composer and creator of the memorable theme music for the Medal of Honor series, he helped set the bar for using music to bring emotion into gaming. Giacchino’s extraordinary talents and musical sensibility have been utilized once again to bring a new dimension to the WWII FPS experience of Medal of Honor Airborne.

Developed at EA Los Angeles under the EA™ brand, Medal of Honor Airborne is rated ‘T’ for Teen by the ESRB. The Xbox 360 version has a US MSRP of $59.99 and US MSRP of $49.99 for the Windows PC version.

Update: Congrats to the first winners of the BlackRadioIsBack.com Giveaway - R. Foy in Ft. Washington, MD and R. Clarke of Washington, DC! Keep on the lookout for more giveaways coming in the future!
