The Wire is one of my favorite TV shows of all time - it just has very good storytelling and overall shows what probably happens in plenty of U.S. 'Hoods on all sides with issues from lots of perspectives (everyday folks living in the area, kids, police, school system, criminals, etc.).
Here is a promo commerical for the new season - the DVR and On Demand watching will be in full effect in case I won't be able to watch the live tapings:
