During Black Music Month 2009, the folks here at BlackRadioIsBack.com and the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast want to put on as many things that are related to Black Music - from the music itself, to the business, cultural aspects, etc. - up through our outlets as possible.

One thing that seems to be very relevant during this age of creative freedoms being lessened (both via laws of the land and economics - 21st Century iCooning is being pushed more as a way to get in the Black Music Door of Success every single day) is awareness of the playing field artists have to deal with to get their craft out everyday.

More and more, various companies are taking over many outlets from radio to television, which is leading to a big homogenization of the type of entertainment most average Americans can see easily every day (thank The Higher Power for the internet for infringing a bit on that territory).

This leads to a lot of hearing and seeing the same old famous people or groups what feels like all of the time - and if someone new gets in the mix, they have to go through a certain system to get there, which sometimes is being exactly like those folks who were already in the mix. :-/

The movie documentary Before The Music Dies shows that this effect is something that is not just affecting Black Music, but all types of creative expression.

Narrated by Forrest Whittaker, there are lots of interviews with various musicians, industry insiders, music critics and fans that reveal how the music industry has reached this current moment and what folks can do about it.

There are also some pretty cool performances from folks like The Dave Matthews Band, Erykah Badu, Seattle street performers, Mississippi gospel singers and others up in the mix.

Check out the documentary below and let us know what you think - hope y'all enjoy it and get something that stimulates thought from the entire scenario! :)

Good Tuesday Morning to our BlackRadioIsBack.com & FuseBox Radio Broadcast peoples! :)

I'm a VERY recent discoverer of Hulu to view TV shows, documentaries, movies and such on the computer, but have noticed they got a lot of interesting viewing up on there (that for now anyway, by the corporate powers of NBC Universal) to provoke some entertainment and thought.

One documentary that caught my eye during an extremely quiet day at the 9 to 5 was "The Oprah Effect", which focuses on TV host, billionaire & businesswoman Oprah Winfrey's impact & influence on promoting various companies, ideas, etc. to the masses through her media empire.

To be honest, I personally feel funny about Oprah.

Props are due for her struggle to get respect in the media field, which still has an extremely disproportionate amount of ANY People of Color doing it up big in this day and age. So for a Black Lady who was not born of privledge to get it in major & have folks sweating her status and power has undeniable inspirational value.

But she's one of many examples of what cost does one take (or who's pocket are you really in) to get "mainstream" acceptance. Especially since most of the time, "mainstream acceptance" doesn't usually lead to full on love or acceptance of so many sorts of people & mentalities (and in this day and age, it's almost anything Hip-Hop Generations related, positive or no).

Anyway, this joint is pretty fascinating to watch, especially since it shows how far these companies go to get some of that Oprah endorsement love (which comes up to be big money at the end of the day) - check it out and let folks know what you think! :)

We HAD to throw this mixtape up as a part of our Black Music Month postings here on BlackRadioIsBack.com....

Now, I know some folks back in the day thought that MC Hammer was the epitome of crossover iCoonery with the dancing, big ol' pants, business deals (don't sleep on the Pepsi endorsement, the Hammerman cartoon and whatnot) & love from those in the mainstream media...

On behalf of those folks, BlackRadioIsBack.com and the FuseBox Radio Broadcast deeply apologize.

In comparison to now when you got folks doing bootleg stripper dancing to get attention, MC Hammer was (and still is) a genuinely nice guy MC who actually did advocate having FUN with Hip-Hop Music (even with his "interesting" period with Death Row Records) and was a great live performer, which is a pretty hard rarity these days.

Besides the fact the music was REALLY some party music - dope samples and grooves were always handy on a Hammer release production wise constantly (feel about the rhymes, lyrics, etc. however you want) - most of these new age rap "moguls" would not be in the mainstream eye if folks like the brother didn't really go there back in the day with the business sponsorships and whatnot, especially during a period of time when Hip-Hop commercial promotions were pretty much limited to gear and malt liquor (shouts to St. Ides).

Anyway, the folks over at The Press Play Show and DJ Mick Boogie put together this mixtape collection of classic MC songs, interludes, original music samples and brand new 2009 remakes of Hammer’s biggest hits (with folks like Mistah Fab, Izza Kizza, 6th Sense and Chip Tha Ripper, with others working with re-done verses by MC Hammer himself) called
ThePressPlayShow.com & Mick Boogie Present: Hammertime! Past, Present & Future (Hosted By MC Hammer).

Cop the mixtape download below and check out some vintage MC Hammer music videos, performances & interviews in the meantime...

Let folks know what you think of everything when you get a chance! :)
