Respect due to the Pyramidwest Media crew for hitting us up with this video!

Video Description:

"He struggled...because so much of the lifestyle that was glorified was not his lifestyle." Branford Marsalis speaking of Keith "Guru" Elam

World renowned saxophonist Branford Marsalis speaks candidly about Guru of Gang Starr (R.I.P.) and the internal struggles he had as a Hip Hop artist.

Marsalis tells of Guru feeling pressure to portray the glorified street lifestyle even though that wasn't his real lifestyle.

He also speaks on what prompted him to create the Buckshot LeFonque album with close friend DJ Premier.

Lastly, he also talks about why he and Harry Connick Jr. started the New Orleans Habitat Musician's Village for musicians who were Hurricane Katrina survivors.

As I’m sure most people know, the state of Black people's portrayals in media (whether via consistent negative portrayals in the mainstream media aka MSM, the lack of People of Color who own or are employed different forms of media outlets, some actual Black-Owned outlets just straight up slacking, etc.) is at a modern day low.

Whether via TV, magazines, radio or newspapers, fewer people have the access to a medium that is supposed to represent them & multiple viewpoints.

Why does it seem that you hear the same songs, see the same videos and multiple clones of TV programming all of the time?

It’s due to how are media is set up.

After all, whoever controls the media controls the people at large.
The Internet - essentially the 21st century printing press more & more people are able to access everyday - is being lined up next to by various companies and interests to segregate people from diverse information, editorial and entertainment as well.

Just check out what's happened about a week ago with the 80+ websites that were shut down by Homeland Security/ICE for "copyright infringement" without any warrants or warnings, such as OnSmash.com and more on the Hip-Hop news, culture & entertainment ends that were working damn near hand in hand with major labels for permission to distribute & promote some of their material.

Finding out is media power is structured in our various countries and why it needs reform is a vital question we all have to look at to properly battle any of the injustices that are occurring from the outside and the inside at all angles.

The awesome non-profit media democracy organization Free Press has a few excellent documents that summarize these issues in a straight & too the point manner for media issues here in the United States that are VERY worthy for anyone interested in this subject matter to check out...

PLEASE feel free to read, print & distribute them ALL and read the other links! Let us know what you think!

During a bit of quiet time this weekend, I hit up the TED website to see if there were any cool talks I could post up to share with everyone, especially after hitting up one of their events about a month ago in Washington, DC, TEDxMidAtlantic.

One of the things I'm really big on with the entire TED concept is that you have different people from all over the world expressing their ideas, concepts, projects, etc. to people in a short time frame to spark minds and conversations - 18 minutes or less.

While this year's DC area TED talks weren't posted up officially yet, I just wanted to share this pretty interesting video about the power & future of performing arts, which I think is really important for the music and entertainment world in general, especially with Black Music.

Give it a view and let us know what you think! :)

Talk Description:

Arts administrator and live-theater fan Ben Cameron looks at the state of the live arts -- asking: How can the magic of live theater, live music, live dance compete with the always-on Internet? At TEDxYYC, he offers a bold look forward.

Ben Cameron Mini-Biography:

Ben Cameron is the Program Director, Arts, at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation in New York, where he supervises a $13 million grants program aimed at the theatre, contemporary dance, jazz and presenting fields.

Grants happen in three main areas: commissioning and distribution of new works; building strong arts organizations; and supporting national arts organizations.

During 13 seasons, Cameron has been a panelist on the opera quiz during the Live from the Metropolitan radio broadcasts from New York. He has also served as a member of the Tony Awards Nominating Committee.
"Ben Cameron is one of the most articulate proponents and supporters of the performing arts."

And now, BlackRadioIsBack.com and FuseBox Radio Broadcast supporters & whatnot, here's even MORE video from the past month or two from the archives to share... :)

This year in October was the first time we rolled out to New York Comic Con to see what was up with the world renown event.

We got the first peek at a lot of the movie, music, cartoon, video game and comic book premiers for 2010 and beyond, found out a bit of what is going on with the indie & major distributor + artist scenes all over the world, the business of comics in entertainment, how REALLY into comics & anime some folk are (the answer by the costumes & conversations we had...VERY) and other good stuff.

Overall the event was a real good time - no strange vibes or attitudes were amongst the literal thousands of people at Jacob Javits Center throughout that Columbus Day weekend, cool information, comic & toys were grabbed up* and a lot of great info & fun was shared by all.

Anyway, below is our FuseBox Radio Broadcast/BlackRadioIsBack.com picture slideshow and panel video we captured during the 3 day event...lay back, watch, relax and enjoy! :)

* Just trying to find a hotel in northern New Jersey - much less New York - without selling my first born & rights to my future children - was utterly insane because of the sheer numbers of people coming to the event - thanks a LOT to Priceline for not having the crew stay at some No Name Boondocks Hotel somewhere during some last minute room booking snafus on our end.

** Hey, I was at NY COMIC CON...HAD to cop something ;)

Video: Stan Lee (Marvel Comics/POW Ent.) & Ne-Yo (Def Jam/R&B Artist): NY Comic Con 2010
Most Random Combination of the entire weekend of events - Stan Lee (Marvel Comics, POW Entertainment) & Ne-Yo (Def Jam/R&B Artist) talking about comic books, upcoming projects, music, joking (Stan Lee constantly calling Ne-Yo a rapper...heh) and more during a panel promoting Ne-Yo's LibraScale album and comic book influenced music video series for his singles...

Video: Kickstarter.com Panel - Kickstart Your Project! (NY Comic Con 2010)

This is the panel was done by Kickstarter.com during this year's NY Comic Com 2010 - good info in general is imparted for creatives who want to utilize the website to raise microfunding for their projects.

Offiicial Panel Description:

Whether you're an indie comic creator, writer, filmmaker, or game designer, producing and self-publishing your own creative work can be a Herculean task!

More and more, independent artists are turning to Kickstarter.com as a place to not only raise funding for their projects, but as a unique way to build fan support and reach out to new communities.

Kickstarter co-founder Yancey Strickler will be on hand, while panelists Jamie Tanner (Aviary), James Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot of Blinkworks Media (Indie Game: The Movie), and Courtney Zell (The Wonder City) will discuss their extraordinary Kickstarter campaigns.
